We know it can feel overwhelming to learn that your pet needs surgery. At AESH, we provide comprehensive veterinary emergency and referral surgical care. Our elective referral surgeries are performed by our board-certified veterinary surgeon. These surgeries include, but are not limited to:

Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery encompasses a wide range of joint and bone surgery

Orthopedic procedures: 

  • Tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) or lateral fabellar suture for cranial cruciate ligament rupture

  • Bone fractures

  • Bone tumors (amputations)

  • Arthrodesis

  • Amputation (Limb, tail, digits)

  • Patellar luxation repair

  • Femoral head ostectomy (FHO)

Soft Tissue Surgery

Soft tissue surgery includes a variety of surgical treatments that do not involve the bone or joints.

Soft Tissue Procedures:  

  • Abdominal exploratory surgery 

  • Thoracic (chest) surgery 

  • Tumor/mass removal 

  • Hepatobiliary surgery (e.g. liver shunt, cholecystectomy [gall bladder removal], removal of liver tumors) 

  • Urogenital surgery (e.g. cystotomy, perineal urethrostomy, ovariohysterectomy, cryptorchid neuter) 

  • Gastrointestinal surgery (e.g. intestinal biopsy, resection/anastomosis, splenectomy) 

  • Respiratory (brachycephalic syndrome, laryngeal paralysis) 

We will start by scheduling a referral appointment to evaluate your pet’s condition, including suitability for anesthesia. This time will be used to discuss surgical options and what to expect for the post-operative recovery.

Emergency Surgery

Experienced emergency veterinarians are on staff 24/7 to perform emergency surgeries, seen through the emergency service.

Emergency Procedures: 

  • Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) or “Bloat” 

  • Ingested object removal (i.e. foreign body removal) 

  • Exploratory abdominal surgery 

  • Splenectomy (e.g. splenic tumor removal) 

  • C-section 

  • Pyometra (ovariohysterectomy)

  • Cystotomy (bladder stone removal)

  • Amputation (tail, limb, toe)

  • Lacerations & wounds (e.g. bite wound, impalement, abscess)

Sarah Jones, DVM, DACVS

Dr. Sarah Jones is board-certified in small animal surgery.

Originally from Battle Creek, Michigan, Dr. Jones received her Bachelor's in biology from Indiana University and her veterinary degree from Michigan State University. Prior to specializing in small animal surgery, she spent four years practicing mixed animal, small animal emergency, and small animal general practice medicine.
